Switching from a weight-loss injection to the Wegovy pill: what to know

Not a like-for-like swap – and not widely available yet
- Switching from a weekly injection to the Wegovy pill is a clinical decision your prescriber makes, not a self-managed route change.
- The pill is not a dose-equivalent of the injection. It is a different medicine form with different daily requirements.
- The Wegovy pill is MHRA-approved but is still rolling out. Most providers are not yet prescribing it.
- Your current injection provider may or may not offer the pill route.

Why it is not a simple swap
A weekly injection and a daily tablet are different in form, dosing and daily routine. Switching is not an automatic or self-managed process.
Different dosing form
Wegovy injection is administered once a week as a subcutaneous injection. The Wegovy pill is taken daily as an oral tablet, under specific morning conditions. The daily discipline is different.
Absorption requirements
Oral semaglutide requires specific fasting conditions to absorb properly. Missing or adjusting the timing can affect how the medicine works. Injections do not have the same daily routine requirement.
Dose is clinically decided
The tablet dose is not matched 1:1 to your injection dose. A prescriber decides the appropriate starting dose. Do not assume your current dose transfers directly.
Different access route
Your current injection provider may not offer the pill. You may need a new provider, which means a new consultation and clinical assessment.
What has to be true before switching is possible
A switch can only be considered once both of the following are confirmed:
- The Wegovy pill is actually in stock at a UK provider and being actively prescribed – not just listed or waitlisted.
- Your prescriber has assessed whether the tablet route is clinically suitable for you specifically.
MHRA approval means the pill has passed the UK regulatory step. It does not mean every UK provider has it in stock or can prescribe it today. Check which providers currently mention the Wegovy pill before assuming it is available through your current route.
Questions to ask your prescriber
These are practical questions for a clinical conversation – a starting point, not medical advice. A prescriber familiar with your treatment history is the right person to answer them.
- Is the Wegovy pill clinically suitable given my current treatment?
- How would dosing start – and is it different from my current injection dose?
- What daily routine would the tablet require, and what happens if I miss a dose?
- What is the private cost compared to my current injection?
- Can you prescribe it, or do I need a different provider?
